Background Remover
A model that knows what a person looks like cuts them out in one click — so a white shirt against a white wall stays put. Save a transparent PNG, drop a new colour behind, or tidy the edges yourself with a brush.
This free background remover runs inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded. One click runs a segmentation model that has learnt the shape of a person, so a white shirt against a white wall survives where colour matching fails. Save a transparent PNG or drop a new colour behind.
Choose a picture
Drag it here, paste it, or tap to browse. A subject against a plain or evenly coloured background comes out cleanest.
Tap any part of the background and everything matching that colour disappears.
It knows what a person looks like, so a white shirt against a white wall stays put. The first use fetches it once, then it works offline.
Higher clears more shades at once. Lower it if parts of the subject start vanishing.
Drag across the picture to erase or to bring parts back.
A little softening stops the cut-out looking like scissor work. Keep it low for text or sharp objects.
PNG keeps the see-through background. JPG cannot, so it saves whatever colour you picked.
Clear the background without sending your photo anywhere
Two ways of working, and the tool uses both. A segmentation model finds the person, and colour matching sharpens the outline — all inside your own browser.
Open the picture
Any photo, scan or screenshot. A plain wall, sky or studio backdrop gives the cleanest cut.
Clear the background
Press the big button and the model cuts the person out. Or tap each background area yourself to go by colour.
Tidy the edges
Erase anything left over, and bring back any part of the subject that disappeared.
Save it
PNG keeps the transparency. Pick a colour first if you need a JPG for a form.
What "how much to clear" does
Every pixel has a colour. The slider sets how far from the tapped colour a pixel can be and still count as background. At a low setting only an almost identical shade goes; at a high setting a whole range of blues or greys goes at once.
Start in the middle. If flecks of wall are left behind, slide right. If the subject's hair or shirt starts disappearing, slide left and tidy the rest with the eraser.
PNG or JPG?
Only PNG can store "nothing here". Save as PNG when you want the cut-out to sit on a poster, a slide or a certificate without a white box around it.
JPG has no transparency at all, so if you choose it the tool fills the cleared area with the colour you selected. That is what most forms want anyway — a plain white background.
How the one-click cut-out works
Pressing the big button runs a segmentation model that has learnt the shape of a person. It does not look at colour at all, which is why a white shirt against a white wall survives — something no colour-matching tool can manage, because the two really are the same colour.
The model then hands the thin uncertain band along the outline to the colour matcher, which knows exactly where the edge falls. The result is the model's judgement with a crisp edge. It is for people; for an object or a logo, tap the background colour instead.
Where schools use this
Student photos for ID cards and forms that demand a plain white background, cut-out pictures for certificates, posters and assembly slides, and tidy product or craft photos for a school website.
The model is about 6 MB and is fetched once. After that it is kept by the browser and the tool runs with no internet at all. If it cannot be reached, everything falls back to colour matching and still works.
Once the background is clear, send the result to the Passport Photo Maker to get the exact size and file size a form asks for.
Background Remover — your questions
How do I remove the background from a picture for free?
Open the picture here and press the clear button. A segmentation model finds the person and cuts them out in one step. Then use the eraser for anything left over and the restore brush for anything removed by mistake, and save it as a PNG.
Does this upload my photo to a server?
No, and that is the main reason to use it. Most background removers send your picture to their servers to process it. This one runs entirely inside your browser on your own device, so the picture never leaves your computer or phone.
Why does my PNG still have a white box around it?
Only PNG can store transparency. If you saved as JPG, the see-through area was filled with a colour, because the JPG format has no way to record nothing. Save again as PNG and the background will be properly see-through.
Does it use AI, and does that mean my photo is uploaded?
It uses a segmentation model, and no, nothing is uploaded. The model itself is downloaded to your device once, about 6 MB, and from then on the cutting happens on your own processor with no internet needed. Services that advertise AI background removal almost always send your picture to their servers instead.
What does the clear amount slider do?
It sets how different a pixel can be from the colour you tapped and still count as background. A low setting removes only an almost identical shade; a high setting removes a whole range of blues or greys at once. If part of the subject disappears, slide it down.
Can I put a white background behind a photo for a form?
Yes. Clear the background, then pick white from the colour swatches and save as JPG. For a photo that also has to be an exact size and file size, send it on to the Passport Photo Maker afterwards.
Can I soften the edge of the cut-out?
Yes, the soften slider blurs the boundary slightly so the subject does not look as though it was cut out with scissors. Keep it low for text, logos and sharp-edged objects, and raise it a little for hair and fur.
What if the cut-out is not perfect?
The model is trained on people, so it is at its best on a portrait. For an object, a logo or a product shot, tap the background colour instead, which goes by colour matching. Either way the erase and restore brushes are there to fix the last few pixels, and undo steps back if you go too far.
