Shimla Public School (SPS) was founded in 1979 by Mrs Pritpal Singh, who had previously worked as the head of the Junior Section at Bishop Cotton School. She started SPS as a nursery school, and due to her tireless dedication and hard work, the school gained a reputation for excellence and became one of the top schools in Shimla.

Over the years, SPS expanded its offerings, adding a new class each year until it gained affiliation with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations in 1986. In 1990, SPS saw its first batch of I.C.S.E students.

Today, SPS has 650 students and 40 teachers, with an additional six prep teachers for hostel students. The school has a dedicated academic staff led by Mrs Reena Singh, who ensures that regular tests are held and homework is kept to a reasonable level. Outside faculty are brought in to supplement the performance of senior students, particularly in maths and science.

In addition to its academic offerings, SPS has a hostel that accommodates 115 students, almost half of whom are foreign nationals. The hostel provides personal care for the children and has two wardens on the campus, as well as the management living on site.

SPS also participates in a range of inter-school events and competitions, with its students excelling in activities such as basketball, athletics, cross-country races, dramatics, indoor shooting, badminton, music, dancing, cooking, and trekking. The school has four houses, named after Indian leaders Tagore, Patel, Gandhi, and Nehru, and holds inter-house competitions each year.

SPS has a school bus available for day scholars to commute to school, as well as for hostel students to participate in tours and treks.
