Bishop Cotton School, located in Shimla, is a prestigious all-boys boarding school that has a rich and fascinating history. Founded on 28th July 1859 by Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton, it is the oldest boys' boarding school in Asia and the first 'Public School' in India.

Bishop George Cotton was an accomplished scholar at Westminster School and a graduate of Cambridge University. He began his teaching career at Rugby School, where he worked under the tutelage of Doctor Thomas Arnold. He later became the Master of Marlborough College. His reputation as an outstanding educator is well-documented in Thomas Hughes' famous book 'Tom Brown's School Days,' where he is referred to as the "model young master."

As the Bishop of Calcutta, Bishop Cotton conducted a service on 28th July 1859 for the foundation of a public school in Shimla. Funds were raised from collections in most of the churches of the Diocese for this purpose. These funds were used to establish the Bishop's School at Jutogh, Shimla. The land and the buildings were a gift from the Viceroy, and three private houses were purchased by Bishop Cotton from the India Public School Fund. The school officially opened its doors for students on 15th March 1863. Although it was referred to as the Shimla Public School in correspondence, it never actually bore that name.

Bishop Cotton School has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, and its alumni include numerous distinguished personalities such as business magnate Ratan Tata, actor Sanjay Dutt, and writer Ruskin Bond. The school offers education from classes IV to XII and follows the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum. The stunning natural surroundings and the temperate climate provide an ideal setting for learning and personal development. The school also has a proud military tradition, and the NCC (National Cadet Corps) is a compulsory part of the school's curriculum.
