A capital city is where a country's government sits, and it is not always the largest city — Australia's capital is Canberra, not Sydney, and Brazil's is Brasília, not São Paulo. A few countries have several: South Africa has three capitals, Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein. This quiz covers 192 countries.

World Capitals Quiz — your questions
How many countries and capitals are there in the world?
This quiz covers 192 countries with their capitals and flags. The exact world total depends on which territories and partly recognised states are counted, which is why different lists give slightly different numbers. For school examinations, learning the United Nations member states and their capitals is enough.
Which countries have more than one capital?
South Africa has three: Pretoria is the executive capital, Cape Town the legislative and Bloemfontein the judicial. Bolivia has Sucre as its constitutional capital and La Paz as the seat of government. Sri Lanka has Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and Colombo, the Netherlands Amsterdam and The Hague, and Malaysia Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
Which capitals are not the largest city of their country?
Many. Australia's capital is Canberra, not Sydney; Canada's is Ottawa, not Toronto; Türkiye's is Ankara, not Istanbul; Brazil's is Brasília, not São Paulo; Nigeria's is Abuja, not Lagos; Pakistan's is Islamabad, not Karachi; the USA's is Washington, D.C., not New York; and the UAE's is Abu Dhabi, not Dubai.
What are the capitals of India's neighbouring countries?
Pakistan — Islamabad; China — Beijing; Nepal — Kathmandu; Bhutan — Thimphu; Bangladesh — Dhaka; Myanmar — Naypyidaw; Sri Lanka — Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, with Colombo as the commercial centre; Afghanistan — Kabul; and Maldives — Malé. The quick challenge button on this page sets up a quiz on exactly this group.
Which capital cities have changed or been renamed?
Myanmar moved its capital from Yangon to Naypyidaw in 2005 and 2006. Kazakhstan moved from Almaty to Astana in 1997, and that city was called Nur-Sultan between 2019 and 2022. Nigeria moved from Lagos to Abuja in 1991, and Burundi from Bujumbura to Gitega in 2019. India's own capital shifted from Calcutta to New Delhi, announced in 1911 and inaugurated in 1931.
What is the best way to memorise world capitals?
Learn one continent at a time rather than an alphabetical list, and link each capital to a picture — Canberra as a can of berries on a kangaroo, Ottawa as an otter in a maple tree. Silly images stick far longer than plain lists. Then test yourself, because recalling a fact fixes it better than rereading it.
