Marks & Grade Calculator
Type your subject marks to get total, percentage, CBSE grade and CGPA instantly — plus best of five, division, a target planner and a result card you can download.
To find the percentage of marks, divide the total marks obtained by the total maximum marks and multiply by 100 — 425 out of 500 is (425 ÷ 500) × 100 = 85%, which is grade A2 on the CBSE scale. To convert CGPA to percentage, multiply by 9.5, so a CGPA of 9.0 is 85.5%.

How percentage, grades and CGPA work
Board results use a few simple rules. Once you know them, you can check any marksheet yourself.
Enter your marks
Type marks obtained and maximum marks for each subject. Leave marks blank for a paper that is still to come.
Mark the 6th subject
Tick “Additional” for an optional or skill subject. It is kept out of the total but can count in Best of 5.

Percentage formula
% = (Total obtained ÷ Total maximum) × 100
Example: 425 out of 500 → 425 ÷ 500 × 100 = 85%. If a paper is out of 80, convert it the same way: 68 ÷ 80 × 100 = 85%.
CBSE 9-point grades
Each subject gets a grade from its marks out of 100: A1 91–100 (GP 10), A2 81–90 (9), B1 71–80 (8), B2 61–70 (7), C1 51–60 (6), C2 41–50 (5), D 33–40 (4) and E 32 or below — needs improvement.
You need at least 33% in a subject to pass it.
CGPA and the 9.5 rule
CGPA = sum of GPs of 5 main subjects ÷ 5
Indicative % = CGPA × 9.5
Grades A2, B1, A1, A2, A2 → (9 + 8 + 10 + 9 + 9) ÷ 5 = 9.0 → 9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5%. CBSE chose 9.5 because students in the 91–100 band averaged about 95%, and 95 ÷ 10 = 9.5.
Best of five & division
Best of 5 takes your five highest subject scores — many colleges and schools use it for admissions, sometimes insisting that a language is one of the five.
State-board style division: Distinction 75%+, First 60%+, Second 45%+, Third 33%+ — awarded only when every subject is passed.
Marks & Grade Calculator — your questions
How do I calculate the percentage of my marks?
Add up the marks you obtained in all subjects, add up the maximum marks for those same subjects, divide the first by the second and multiply by 100. For example 425 out of 500 is (425 ÷ 500) × 100 = 85%. A paper out of 80 converts the same way: 68 ÷ 80 × 100 = 85%.
What is the CBSE grading system and the grade points?
CBSE uses a 9-point scale on each subject's marks out of 100: A1 is 91 to 100 with grade point 10, A2 is 81 to 90 with 9, B1 is 71 to 80 with 8, B2 is 61 to 70 with 7, C1 is 51 to 60 with 6, C2 is 41 to 50 with 5, D is 33 to 40 with 4, and E is 32 or below, which needs improvement and carries no grade point.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 9.0 is 9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5%, and 8.6 is 81.7%. CBSE chose the multiplier 9.5 because students scoring in the 91 to 100 band averaged about 95 marks, and 95 ÷ 10 = 9.5. The result is an indicative percentage, not a figure printed on the marksheet.
How is CGPA calculated from grades?
Add the grade points of your five main subjects and divide by 5. Grades A2, B1, A1, A2 and A2 give (9 + 8 + 10 + 9 + 9) ÷ 5 = 9.0. A grade of E carries no grade point, so a CGPA is not awarded until that subject is cleared. Additional subjects are left out of the five.
What is best of five and how is it worked out?
Best of five takes your five highest subject scores and works out the percentage from those alone. Many schools and colleges use it for admission, and some insist that one of the five must be a language. If you have taken a sixth or additional subject and scored well in it, best of five can lift your percentage noticeably.
What are the passing marks in CBSE?
You need at least 33% in a subject to pass it, which is grade D. For subjects with both theory and practical components, schools also expect a minimum in each part as laid down in the scheme of studies for that subject, so check your school's rule as well as the overall 33%.
What percentage is first division or distinction?
These are state-board style labels rather than CBSE ones: distinction from 75%, first division from 60%, second division from 45% and third division from 33%, awarded only when every subject is passed. CBSE itself does not declare an overall division or aggregate — schools and colleges work the percentage out themselves.
