How it works

Write हिंदी and ਪੰਜਾਬੀ with an English keyboard

No special keyboard, no font install, nothing to download. Spell the word the way it sounds and the tool builds the letters for you.

Type the sound

Write kabootar, paanii, namaste — ordinary English letters.

Press space

The word is converted at once. Keep typing — a whole paragraph works.

Pick the right spelling

Other spellings appear under the box. Click one, or press 1–5.

Short and long vowels

One letter is short, a double letter is long. This single idea fixes most spelling mistakes.

  • a अ · aa आ — kam कम but kaam काम
  • i इ · ii or ee ई — din दिन, diin दीन
  • u उ · uu or oo ऊ — sun सुन, suun सून
  • e ए · ai ऐ · o ओ · au औ

Breathy, curled and dotted letters

  • Add h for the breathy pair: k क → kh ख, p प → ph फ.
  • Use a CAPITAL for the tongue-curled letters: T ट, Th ठ, D ड, Dh ढ, N ण, R ड़ ੜ.
  • Dotted (nukta / pair-bindi) letters: z ज़ ਜ਼, f फ़ ਫ਼, K ख़ ਖ਼, G ग़ ਗ਼, sh श ਸ਼.

Joined letters and doubles

Two consonants with no vowel between them join up. In Devanagari they form a conjunct with a halant; in Gurmukhi a repeated letter takes ਅੱਧਕ instead.

  • kyaa → क्या · pyaar → प्यार ਪਿਆਰ
  • kuttaa → कुत्ता ਕੁੱਤਾ · phull → ਫੁੱਲ
  • karm → कर्म · pustak → पुस्तक

The nasal sound

Write n or m before another consonant and the tool uses the nasal mark automatically — andar अंदर ਅੰਦਰ, rang रंग ਰੰਗ, amb ਅੰਬ.

At the end of a word add M: haaM हाँ ਹਾਂ, maiM मैं ਮੈਂ, tusiiM ਤੁਸੀਂ. Gurmukhi picks ਟਿੱਪੀ or ਬਿੰਦੀ by itself, following the matra it sits on.

A word came out wrong? That is normal — the same English spelling can mean two different words. Look at the suggestions under the typing box and click the right one; the tool remembers your choice for that word from then on.
Questions & answers

Hindi & Punjabi Typing — your questions

How do I type in Hindi using an English keyboard?

Spell the word the way it sounds and press space — namaste becomes नमस्ते. Double a vowel for the long sound: kam is कम but kaam is काम. Add h for the breathy pair, so k gives क and kh gives ख. Use a capital for the tongue-curled letters: T is ट, D is ड, N is ण.

Do I need to install a Hindi or Punjabi font?

No. Nothing is installed and nothing is downloaded. The tool builds real Unicode Devanagari and Gurmukhi letters inside your browser, so the text you copy pastes correctly into WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs, email or any website. Your device already has the fonts needed to display them.

How do I type the nasal sound in Hindi and Punjabi?

Write n or m before another consonant and the nasal mark is added for you — andar gives अंदर and ਅੰਦਰ, rang gives रंग and ਰੰਗ. At the end of a word, add a capital M: haaM gives हाँ and ਹਾਂ, maiM gives मैं and ਮੈਂ. In Gurmukhi the tool chooses ਟਿੱਪੀ or ਬਿੰਦੀ by itself.

The word came out wrong — how do I fix it?

That is normal, because the same English spelling can stand for two different words. Other spellings appear under the typing box; click the right one or press the number beside it. The tool remembers your choice for that word from then on, and you can wipe all remembered choices with “Reset my spellings”.

How do I type the dotted letters like ज़ and ਜ਼?

Use the single letters set aside for them: z gives ज़ and ਜ਼, f gives फ़ and ਫ਼, K gives ख़ and ਖ਼, G gives ग़ and ਗ਼, and sh gives श and ਸ਼. These are the nukta letters in Devanagari and the pair-bindi letters in Gurmukhi, used mostly for words borrowed from Urdu, Persian and English.

Can I type directly in the script instead of English letters?

Yes. Switch to the Script keyboard tab and tap the Devanagari or Gurmukhi keys on screen — each one is inserted wherever your cursor is. Hover a key to see which English letters produce it. There is also a printable chart of the full mapping to keep beside the keyboard while you learn.
