Hangman Spelling Game

Guess the word letter by letter from graded Class 2–10 word lists, five picture categories or your teacher's own words — every word ends with its meaning and an example sentence.

Class 2–10 Games & Puzzles Meaning + sentence Two-player mode

Hangman is played by guessing one letter at a time, and six wrong letters end the round. Start with the vowels E, A, I, O and U, then the commonest consonants T, N, S, R, H and L. This version has more than 300 graded Class 2 to 10 words, and each round ends with the meaning and a sentence.

How it works

Spelling practice that feels like a game

Over 300 graded words from Class 2 to Class 10, each with a meaning, a category and an example sentence — plus space for your own spelling list.

Pick your words

Choose a class, a category like animals or countries, or type your own weekly spelling list.

Guess letters

Tap the on-screen keyboard or type. Six wrong letters and the round ends.

Use a hint wisely

The meaning costs 5 points; revealing a letter costs one life. Finish with no hints for a bonus.

Learn the word

Every round ends with the spelling, the meaning and a sentence — then straight to the next word.

Start with the vowels

Almost every English word has a vowel. Try E, then A, I, O, U first — the pattern of vowels tells you how many syllables the word has.

E · A · I · O · U

Then the common consonants

In English the most used letters, in order, are E T A O I N S H R. After the vowels, try T, N, S, R, H and L before rare letters like Q, X, Z and J.

Look for word endings

Long words usually end in a known suffix. Guessing the ending often opens three letters at once.

Common endings: -ing, -tion, -ment, -ness, -able, -ous, -ful, -ly.

Double letters and pairs

Some letters travel together: qu, th, ch, sh, ck, ph. And many spelling-test words hide a double letter — necessary, committee, accommodation. If you find one C in accurate, test the second.

For teachers: paste this week's spelling list into Teacher's words, press Hide & play and hand the device or smart board to the class — the list stays hidden while children play. Use Word list to print the class words with meanings as a revision sheet.
Questions & answers

Hangman Spelling Game — your questions

Which letters should I guess first in hangman?

Start with vowels, because almost every English word has one: try E first, then A, I, O and U. The pattern of vowels also tells you roughly how many syllables the word has. After that, go for the commonest consonants — T, N, S, R, H and L — and leave Q, X, Z and J until last.

How do I guess a long word in hangman?

Look for a familiar ending. Long English words usually finish with a known suffix such as -ing, -tion, -ment, -ness, -able, -ous or -ly, and guessing the ending often opens three letters at once. Then check for letters that travel in pairs: qu, th, ch, sh, ck and ph.

Can a teacher put this week's spelling list into the game?

Yes. Open the Teacher's words tab, paste the list one word per line, and add a meaning after an equals sign if you wish. Press Hide and play so the words are hidden, then hand over the device or the smart board. The list is saved on that device only and is never uploaded.

How many wrong guesses are allowed?

Six. Each wrong letter draws one more part of the picture, and the round ends when the sixth is used. Revealing a letter as a hint costs one of those six lives, so it is worth spending points on the meaning instead when the word is simply unfamiliar.

Does the game show what the word means?

Yes. Every word in the graded lists comes with a plain-English meaning, a category and an example sentence, and all three are shown at the end of the round whether you guessed it or not. That is what turns a guessing game into genuine vocabulary practice.

Can two children play against each other?

Yes. In two-player mode Player 1 types a word and an optional clue, the screen hides it, and Player 2 guesses letter by letter. Scores for both players are kept below the game. It works well on one tablet, one shared computer or a classroom smart board.
