Handwriting Practice Sheets
Make four-line, headline and box-grid tracing sheets for English, Hindi and Punjabi — the alphabet, numbers or your own word-of-the-day list — and print them on real A4.
To make handwriting practice sheets, choose the script, pick the alphabet, numbers or your own words, then print on A4. English sheets use the four-line copybook: capitals and the tall letters b d f h k l t fill the top two spaces, small letters sit in the middle space, and the tails of g j p q y drop below the baseline.

The English four-line rule
The classic copybook has four lines making three spaces. Capital letters and the tall letters b d f h k l t fill the top two spaces. Small letters such as a c e m n o r s u v w x z sit only in the middle space. The tails of g j p q y drop into the bottom space.
Keep the middle space the busiest — most of a word lives there, and even spacing there is what makes writing look neat.
शिरोरेखा — the Devanagari headline
Hindi letters hang from a top line called the शिरोरेखा. Teach children to write the body of the letter first and then join all the headlines in one straight stroke across the word — that single habit makes Hindi handwriting look instantly tidier.
The light line above leaves room for ि ी े ै ो ौ and the light line below for ु ू ृ.
Gurmukhi and its top line
Gurmukhi letters also hang from a continuous top line. The 35 letters of the ਪੈਂਤੀ are learnt in seven rows of five, beginning ੳ ਅ ੲ ਸ ਹ. Lagan matran (ਕੰਨਾ, ਸਿਹਾਰੀ, ਬਿਹਾਰੀ, ਔਂਕੜ…) are added above and below, so leave room on both sides.
Practise one row of five letters a day and the whole ਪੈਂਤੀ takes a week.
How to use the sheets well
- Start with Trace all, move to Trace then write, finish with Model + blank.
- Bigger letters for Class 1–2 (45–60 px), smaller for Class 4–5 (24–32 px).
- Two lines per letter gives a traced line and a free line underneath.
- Light grey or blue guide lines photocopy better than dark ones.
- Ten quiet minutes a day beats one long session a week.
Handwriting Practice Sheets — your questions
How do I make handwriting practice sheets for Class 1?
Choose English, select Capital letters or Capital and small pairs, keep the four-line ruling, and set the letter size to around 45 to 60 pixels for small hands. Start with the "Trace all" style so every letter is dotted, then print on A4. One line per letter with auto copies fills the line neatly.
What is the four-line rule in English handwriting?
A copybook page has four lines making three spaces. Capitals and the tall letters b, d, f, h, k, l and t fill the top two spaces. Small letters such as a, c, e, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x and z sit only in the middle space. The tails of g, j, p, q and y drop into the bottom space.
Can I make cursive writing practice sheets?
Yes. Under Letter style choose Cursive for joined writing, or Beginner for print letters with entry strokes that help a child start each letter in the right place. Cursive works best from about Class 3, once a child is forming separate print letters confidently. Begin with traced cursive on four-line ruling before moving to blank lines.
How do I make a Hindi handwriting worksheet?
Switch the script to हिन्दी and pick swar, vyanjan, the full varnamala, barahkhadi or अंक, or type your own words. Hindi letters hang from a top line called the shirorekha. Teach children to write the body of each letter first and then join all the headlines in one straight stroke across the word.
Does it work for Punjabi Gurmukhi letters?
Yes. Choose ਪੰਜਾਬੀ for the 35 letters of the painti, all 41 letters including the dotted ones, lagan matran, Gurmukhi numerals, or your own words. Gurmukhi also hangs from a continuous top line, and the ruling leaves room for matras above and below. One row of five letters a day covers the painti in a week.
How can I help a child improve their handwriting at home?
Work through the styles in order: trace everything, then trace a few and write the rest, then copy from a model onto blank lines. Use bigger letters for Class 1 and 2 and smaller for Class 4 and 5. Ten quiet minutes a day beats one long session a week, and even spacing in the middle space is what makes writing look neat.
Which ruling should I choose — four lines, two lines or boxes?
Box grid puts one letter in each square and suits Class 1 letter formation and numbers. Two lines give only a top line and a baseline for very young children. Four lines are the standard English copybook ruling. A single baseline is the last step before writing on plain paper.
