Admission Age Calculator
Enter a date of birth to get the child’s exact age on the admission cut-off date and the class they are eligible for under NEP 2020 — or check a whole list at once at the admission desk.
Under NEP 2020 a child must have completed 6 years on the admission cut-off date to join Class 1, and the rule runs Class n needs n + 5 years. Nursery needs 3 years, LKG 4 and UKG 5. A child born 14 August 2021 is 5 years 7 months on 31 March 2027, so UKG, not Class 1.

The right class for the right age
Under NEP 2020 a child should be at least 6 years old to join Class 1. This calculator applies that rule to any cut-off date your state or school uses.

Use the birth certificate date. Leave the name blank if you only need the age.
Pick session and cut-off

NEP 2020 age rule
Class n → at least (n + 5) years
Pre-school: Nursery / Balvatika 1 at 3+, LKG / Balvatika 2 at 4+, UKG / Balvatika 3 at 5+. Then Class 1 at 6+, Class 2 at 7+ … Class 10 at 15+ and Class 12 at 17+, all counted in completed years on the cut-off date.
The 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 structure
- Foundational (ages 3–8): 3 years of pre-school + Class 1–2
- Preparatory (ages 8–11): Class 3–5
- Middle (ages 11–14): Class 6–8
- Secondary (ages 14–18): Class 9–12
How exact age is counted
Count whole years, then whole months, then the leftover days from the last “monthly birthday”. Example: born 14 Aug 2021, age on 31 Mar 2027 → 14 Aug 2026 is 5 years, 14 Mar 2027 is 7 more months, then 17 days → 5 years 7 months 17 days — eligible for UKG, not Class 1.
Admission Age Calculator — your questions
What is the minimum age for admission to Class 1 under NEP 2020?
The National Education Policy 2020 sets 6 completed years as the age for entry to Class 1, counted on the school's admission cut-off date rather than on the day you apply. Before that come three pre-school years — Nursery or Balvatika 1 at 3 years, LKG or Balvatika 2 at 4, and UKG or Balvatika 3 at 5.
How do I calculate my child's age for school admission?
Count the age on the cut-off date, not today. Take whole years first, then whole months, then the days left over from the last monthly birthday. A child born 14 August 2021 has turned 5 by 14 August 2026, gains 7 more months by 14 March 2027, and then 17 days, giving 5 years 7 months 17 days on 31 March 2027.
What age does my child need to be for each class?
The rule is Class n needs at least n + 5 completed years, so Class 1 at 6, Class 2 at 7, Class 5 at 10, Class 10 at 15 and Class 12 at 17. The table on this page also shows the range of birth dates that fits each class for the cut-off date you choose, which is handy at the admission counter.
Is the admission cut-off date always 31 March?
No. 31 March is the most common date, but states, boards and individual schools differ — some use 1 April, 1 June, 31 July or 30 September. The cut-off can be changed on this page, including to a custom date, so always check your state's latest admission notice before relying on a result.
My child misses the Class 1 age by a few days. What happens?
The calculator shows exactly how many days short the child is and the date they reach the required age. Most schools apply the cut-off strictly and will offer admission to the class below, with Class 1 the following session. A few schools consider relaxation in writing, so ask the school directly rather than assuming.
What is the 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 structure in NEP 2020?
It replaces the old 10 + 2 pattern. The Foundational stage covers ages 3 to 8 — three pre-school years plus Classes 1 and 2. Preparatory is ages 8 to 11, Classes 3 to 5. Middle is ages 11 to 14, Classes 6 to 8. Secondary is ages 14 to 18, Classes 9 to 12.
Can I check the age of a whole admission list together?
Yes. In Bulk mode you paste one child per line as name followed by date of birth, or copy two columns straight out of Excel or Google Sheets. Dates in DD/MM/YYYY, DD-MM-YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD or "14 Aug 2021" form are all read. The table can be sorted, printed, or downloaded as a CSV file.
